Be a Professional

Objective: To learn about careers in science.

​

Task: 

  1. Find a specific career in science. (teacher note - have no two students choose the same career) 

  2. Research the following information on that career:​​

    • Average salary​

    • Education needed

    • Average day in the life of that professional (Think of this question: What are at least  three things that the professional does as part of their career?)

    • Work environment (examples: Does the career require being outside? Do these professionals tend to live in certain areas of the world - ex: near an ocean? Do these professionals work in a lab, hospital, organization, nonprofit, etc? 

    • Find at least one job opening for the career

  3. Write an essay using the information you ​found. Use the RACE strategy. Answer the questions: What is important to know about being a _____?

  4. Write a fictional one-page resume for yourself as if you just graduated college and are looking for a job in that career. Include the following information:

    • Full name​

    • Fictional professional email address

    • Fictional college information

      • University name​

      • University city and state

      • Major - both for undergrad and graduate work

      • GPA - both for undergrad and graduate work

    • TWO fictional work experiences - ​what jobs do you think a college student would need to have to be prepared for this career?

      • Where you worked​

      • How may years you worked at that job

      • What you did at the job

Time to complete:  3-5 days
